Examination in Progress (for strings)

2009 – Examination in progress, for junior string orchestra. Commissioned by Gary Woolf. Duration: approx 4 minutes.
This short piece is comical in character and will have people smiling! It began life as a solo piano piece back in 1980 when I was at school and stressing over my first secondary school exams. Everywhere I looked in my school I was confronted with signs that read, “Silence! Examination In Progress”. A comical tune started up in my head and before I knew it it grew into a piano piece, which I wrote down and played daily to help myself cope with the stress of exams. When Gary asked for another Banda piece, I was excited to give this early little savior another chance at life as a piece for junior strings.
