I can produce arrangements and orchestrations for school (or other) orchestras, bands and choirs, tailor-made to suit any combinations of instruments and the standards of the players. This can be especially helpful to rushed, hard pressed music teachers who may need a helping hand in preparing material for school productions.

My works are currently being self-prepared under the name of Oakmountmusic.co.uk

Compositions

* commissioned works

  • June 2010 - Oakmount nocturne, for Flute and Piano, Duration approx. 8 minutes

Written for Gary Woolf, this piece is romantic in character, flowing and melodic. It's main theme was actually sketched down when I was in my late teens, inspired by an old house I was once very fond of. The tune lay homeless for only 25 years before I recently discovered it again and decided that it had waited long enough and was too nice to waste!

  • *March 2010 - "Humdinger" for String Orchestra, Duration 4 minutes 42 seconds.

This piece was specially written for and dedicated to Gary Woolf and the Banda di Musica in Emsdetten, Germany. It is fast, lively, tuneful and comical, with a very mischievous character. It could be enjoyed by both students and professionals alike.

There are two arrangements available:

Standard: for Violin 1, violin 2, viola, cello and double bass

School arrangement: for Violin 1, Violin 2, Violin 3, Cello 1 and Cello 2

  • *May 2009 - Trio, for Flute, Violin and Piano, in 4 movements.  Duration - 25 minutes.

This piece was requested by Gary Woolf. It encompasses a wide range of emotions, from chilid-like innocence to tragedy and also extreme comedy. The 2nd and 4th movements are highly rhythmic and almost jazzy, while the 1st and 3rd movements centre more on melody and lucious harmony.

  • *October 2009 - "Nocturne" for Flute and Piano Duration 4 minutes

Requested by flautist Gary Woolf for Clare Southworth, this little piece is simply a pretty melody for flute and piano something akin to a slow, Irish air. It is peaceful and strong and would fit well into any programme of either folk or Romantic music.

  • 2009 - Sea Shanty Dance, for String Orchestra Duration: 4 minutes (On Recordings Page)

This short piece can be enjoyed by both professionals and students alike. It is rhythmic and tuneful, with             a Russian folk song flavour. There are two arrangements available:

Standard: for Violins 1 and 2, viola, cello and Double Bass

School arrangement: for Violins 1, 2 and 3, cellos 1 and 2

  • *2007 - Flute Concerto, for Flute strings and harp, in two movements (on Recordings Page) Commissioned by flautist Gary Woolf.

Duration: 30 minutes.

This piece was inspired by my life-long friendship with an Irish family. It has a strong Irish flavour, especially in the 2nd movement where the first theme is an Irish reel. It is Romantic in style, with luscious melodies and something of a filmic flavour.

A short piece of about 4 minutes in length which would suit a junior string orchestra. Melodic and lush. There are 2 arrangements available;

Standard: for Vln 1 and 2, Viola, Cello and Double Bass.

School Arrangement: for Vln 1, 2 and 3, Cello 1 and 2.

  • *2009 - Examination in progress, for junior string orchestra. Commissioned by Gary Woolf. (on Recordings Page). Duration: approx 4 minutes.

This short piece is comical in character and will have people smiling!

Two arrangements available;

Standard: for Vln 1 and 2, Viola, Cello and Double Bass.

School Arrangement: for; Vln 1, 2 and 3, Cello 1 and 2.

  • * 2008 - Miscellany, 7 short movements for solo piano (on Recordings Page) Commi ssioned by conductor/pianist Anthony Davie.

Duration: approx 15 minutes in total.

Inspired by friends, family and general life experiences, this set of short pieces encompasses a range of moods; from Romantic and melodic to comical and dissonant.

  • 2007-2009 - Collection of contemporary Irish folk music ( 80 melodies)

This is a volume of original, traditional style Irish melodies. There are jigs, slip-jigs, reels, hornpipes and slow airs. Although written with the D whistle in mind, they can still be played on most treble clef instruments. They also have suggested guitar chords to aid accompaniment.

  • * 1991 – 1995 Four musicals commissioned by Herne Hill Primary school. (Recording/video available) Commissioned by Herne Hill Primary School.

Each musical consists of approximately 10 songs, an overture and incidental music, for piano and clarinet.

    1. * Sea Shanty for a King – 1991
    2. * Charlie Bean Saves the Day – 1992
    3. * The Crown of Power – 1993
    4. * The Secret of Lowe’s Gully - 1995

1992 - Bass clarinet concerto, for solo bass clarinet and strings, in three movements (on Recordings Page)

This piece is now published by Alea Publishing and can be purchased from their website at     www.bassclarinet.org under "Sheet Music", "Concerto". It is available in its origonal orchestral form and also in piano reduction with bass clarinet part.

Total duration: 23 minutes

Inspired immediately after the buying of my bass clarinet, this piece is generally jovial in character with luscious melodies and a romping, mischievous character. The middle movement is rather more austere, showing the bass clarinet’s darker, more serious side.

  • *1992 - Mini concerto for Alex, for solo cello (about grade 6 or 7) and school orchestra (on Recordings page) Commissioned by Ibstock Place School.

Duration: approx. 10 minutes.

In one movement, this piece is light in character and great fun for a school orchestra with a young, aspiring cellist.

  • * 1991 - Divertissement, in three movements, for Clarinet Choir. Commissioned by Peter Morris and the Thameside Clarinet Choir. Performed in at least three concerts.

Duration: approx. 20 minutes

This work will equally suit a large or small group of clarinets of grade 7 standard and above. It is both light hearted and serious, with dark, swirling textures and light, rhythmic passages throughout.

  • * 1992 - Septet for flute, harpsichord, 2 violins, viola, cello and double bass, in five movements (on Recordings page) Commissioned by violinist Carl Beddow.

Total duration: 35 minutes.

This piece encompasses many emotions. It is highly rhythmic, melodic and also has a generous helping of punchy aggression and dissonance.

  • *1993 - Suite for clarinet quartet. For 3 Bflat clarinets, one doubling Eflat, and bass clarinet. Commissioned by Michael Bryant. In 5 movements.

Duration: 20 minutes

Based on tunes from one of my Herne Hill musicals, this piece is light hearted and tuneful with plenty of foot-tapping rhythms.

  • 1991 - Concerto for BClarinet and full orchestra, in three movements.

Duration: Approx. 40 minutes.

This work has not yet been played. It is highly Romantic in style and its emotions range from the truly demonic and furious 1st movement to a light and comical 3rd movement. The middle movement is ethereal and highly chromatic and the most gentle of the three.

  • * 1990 - Concertino for treble recorder strings and harp. Commissioned by recorder player Ruth Whatley.

Duration: 15 minutes

This is a single movement piece which centres on the pentatonic scale. A friend who attended the rehearsal described it as being “like the South American rain forests”. I think this is a very fitting description. It was inspired by my experiences of long distance travelling.

  • 1989 - Prelude for solo piano (Recording available)

Duration: 6 minutes

This piece is rhapsodic in style and seeks to express the atmospheres in and around an old, once stately home that has gone to wrack and ruin.

  • 1989 - "The Thresher" Sonata for strings, in two movements.

Duration: 10 minutes.

This work is punchy, rhythmic and generally good humoured. It encompasses both some dissonance and strong, flowing melodies.

  • 1990 - Shaftesbury House Overture, comical piece for Clarinet, piano, flute/piccolo. Cello, tuba and percussion.

Dutation: approx 10 minutes

This piece was written as an end of year exercise for my post graduate film course at the London College of music. It is designed as an overture to an imaginary musical, with several light hearted tunes and comical orchestration. It was inspired by the characters of several, crazy flatmates I was house-sharing with at the time.

  • 1988 - "The Dip" Suite for full orchestra, in five movements.

Duration: approx. 25 minutes.

Written while still at college, this piece was inspired by 4 very close friends and their wonderful characters and personalities. It is extremely funny and light hearted, although it does also have its quieter, more thoughtful moments. It still awaits its premiere.

  • 1988 - “Ballade”, short piece for full orchestra, rehearsed by London College of Music Symphony Orchestra.

Duration: approx 4/5 minutes.

This little piece is lush and full with a single melody running throughout. It would fit comfortably as a short overture at the start or end of a concert and is simple in harmonic and melodic structure.

  • 1990 - Score for film “My Brother Rob”, by student director Alison Hilder (for strings, keyboards, 3 flutes and harp)
  • 1990 - Score for student film “Trespassers”, for clarinet, cello, viola and percussion.

The above 2 film scores were written as part of my LCM post graduate film course. We worked with student film directors at the Hillingdon school of Film and Television.
